There are a lot of choices for orthodontic appliances, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, and the Invisalign clear aligner system. We’ll look at the other devices in more detail in other posts, but today we are going to focus on ceramic braces, sometimes called white braces, and what their benefits and drawbacks are. Your North Miami Beach dentist for braces will be able to answer any specific questions you have about ceramic braces.

Before we get started, let’s take a moment to see what some of the experts in orthodontic medicine have to say.

Children and teens often prefer metal brackets and braces to clear braces (Kuhlman DC et al.,2016). You might think this seems odd, but kids are more drawn to getting their treatment done versus how they look.

The aesthetics have a number of factors (Kuhlman DC et al.,2016), and for kids this can include things like being able to get colored elastics. Plus, modern materials have transformed orthodontic treatment and now things like heat-activated space age metals and smaller brackets translate to faster treatments that are more comfortable in years past.

One factor driving changes in orthodontia is aesthetics, and as a result everyone benefits. Even teenagers have aesthetic desires for braces because they can feel self-conscious and so orthodontia has evolved. (Kuhlman DC et al.,2016).

There are several factors that go into the cost of braces. The material is one of the largest driving factors. Traditional metal braces will run between $3,000 and $7,000, making them the most affordable option.

The next most expensive are ceramic braces/white braces. They are made from ceramic material that comes in a few shades to better match the color of your teeth. You can get a regular metal wire or a white wire to make them less noticeable. They cost between $4,000 and $8,000.

Lingual braces are much more expensive, starting at $8,000 and going up from there.  They are traditional metal braces that are affixed to the back of the teeth.  Because they are technically speaking more difficult to install, they are not often used but for people who want the speed of regular braces and an invisible treatment type, this is their choice.

Lastly there is the Invisalign clear aligner system. It costs about the same as ceramic braces so long as you keep them in for 22 hours a day so that they can do the work they need to do.  All of these types of braces are effective at giving you well aligned straight teeth and improving your oral health. You and your orthodontist will develop the treatment plan that is right for you and uses the best treatment type for your needs and wants.

How are ceramic braces better than metal braces? How to get white teeth with braces

Ceramic braces have some significant advantages over metal braces, not the least of which is that they are much less noticeable when compared to traditional metal braces. They are a great pick for adults who want to get a fast orthodontic treatment without an obvious mouth full of metal thanks to their tooth colored material. They can also show more of your teeth so you have a brighter smile.

Both styles will correct crooked teeth and give you great results. Both will have your teeth move into their new positions in about 24 months on average.

You may wonder about how you can get white teeth with braces. The best way to do that is to make sure that you are brushing and flossing your teeth regularly and using something like a water irrigation device that can “floss” without floss.  It is a great tool for removing food particles from around the brackets and wires and keeping your teeth clean. This also helps prevent gum disease that can occur when food particles decay next to the gums.

When your braces come off, you can always ask your dentist or orthodontist near me about a tooth whitening procedure so you can really show off your new smile with your nice straight teeth.

How much do metal and ceramic braces cost? How to keep teeth white with braces

We talked above about the cost of braces, but one factor we haven’t really gone into is how to keep your teeth white while you are wearing braces. Especially when you have ceramic braces, you need to avoid some foods that can stain the teeth and the tooth colored brackets.

Some of these foods include red wine, beets, brown sodas or colas, foods made with turmeric, coffee and tea, and tomato based pasta sauces. All of these have some serious staining power and may turn your ceramic brackets an odd color as well as stain your teeth. Ceramic material is more porous and subject to staining when compared to stainless steel.

While you have braces on, you should also make an appointment every six months to see your dentist for a good professional cleaning. They can polish the teeth around the brackets and keep them sparkling.

When you brush your teeth, one thing to keep in mind is not to brush too hard as this can scratch your teeth and leave you with stripes above and below your brackets.

How was your experience with ceramic braces? White braces

Many people who use ceramic braces or white braces have a very positive experience with them. They appreciate the nearly transparent nature of ceramic braces and that helps boost their confidence and help them feel less self-conscious.

Particularly if you choose to go with clear or light tan elastics, you will have a set of materials that are very close to invisible, and you maintain the speed of treatment that comes with bracket and wire braces.

How much money will it cost to wear braces? What color braces make your teeth look white

The best color of braces to make your teeth look white is either the ivory or clear bracket as these will allow your natural teeth to shine. Pair them with clear, ivory, or silver elastics and you have the best combination of orthodontics that will help your teeth look bright.

Is Invisalign really better than braces?

Better is a relative term.  You should ask your orthodontist if you are a good candidate for Invisalign since not everyone is. But, in terms of an orthodontic appliance that lays flat against the teeth and is just as effective as braces for mild to moderate orthodontic issues, it’s tough to beat Invisalign.

Invisalign costs about the same as ceramic braces, but you get a much better aesthetic even over white braces, because they are a clear plastic tray that slips over your teeth completely. Think of them as a brace fitted to exactly your specifications. If they do get stained, it is only temporary as you get new trays every 2-4 weeks.
